If you live or work in the North End you may know how I feel when sometimes, just once in a while, I wish there was somewhere to go besides my usual lunch and dinner spots for a quick bite in the neighborhood. Look no further; Nick Varano’s Famous Deli has arrived.

Restaurateur Nick Varano decided to break out from the norm when it comes to North End dining spots and go in another direction with his latest venture. Varano grew up around the deli business; his family ran one in East Boston for many years and being so familiar with it, he thought it was time to, “give the people a different feel” from his other North End restaurants, Strega and Nico.

Inspired by legendary delis like Carnegie and Stage Deli in New York City, Varano knew something like this had been long overdue in Boston.  With an emphasis on classic sandwiches like roast beef and pastrami on rye, the deli stays true to what a classic deli should be. The roast beef is made in house and foot long pearl hot dogs are a staple on the menu as well. Sides of pickles, potato salad, pasta salad and cole slaw are offered to accompany the sandwiches.

The theme of the deli is what sets it apart from the others. Vintage newspapers dating back to the 1920’s cover the walls and a tin ceiling accentuates the classic look. Keep a look out for local personalities hidden within the wall’s art. The deli’s theme spotlights an Old Hollywood feel, with sandwiches named after both local and major legendary celebrities.

The Deli features a take-out window for patrons on the go, and corporate catering and delivery are available. Seating options include a long counter and small tables inside or the outside patio where you can’t beat the people watching location on Cross Street.

The next time you’re in the North End and don’t feel like going to your typical lunch spot, head to Nick Varano’s Famous Deli to satisfy any sandwich craving. The corned beef sandwich in your hands may make you forget your still in Boston’s “little Italy.”
